Gum Health Treatment Solutions

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures around your teeth, ranging from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. This progressive condition begins with plaque buildup and can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss if left untreated. Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City provides comprehensive periodontal care to diagnose, treat, and manage gum disease at every stage.

The disease often develops silently without obvious symptoms in its early stages, making regular dental checkups crucial for early detection. Advanced periodontal disease has also been linked to serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes, making treatment important for your overall health.

Gum Disease Treatment

Our Periodontal Treatment Process

Periodontal disease threatens your teeth and overall health, but we can stop its progression effectively.
Here’s how we restore your gum health and protect your smile from further damage.
1

Thorough Diagnosis

We carefully examine your gums and measure pocket depths around each tooth to assess the extent of periodontal disease. Digital X-rays help us evaluate bone loss and determine the most effective treatment approach for your condition.
2

Deep Cleaning Therapy

We remove only a tiny amount of enamel from the front surface of your teeth—just enough to accommodate the thin veneers. This conservative approach preserves your natural teeth while creating space for your beautiful new smile.
3

Ongoing Maintenance

We establish a personalized maintenance schedule to keep your periodontal disease under control long-term. Regular professional cleanings combined with improved home care techniques help prevent reinfection and maintain your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Periodontal Disease FAQs

Periodontal disease affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth, but early detection and treatment can save your smile. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive comprehensive periodontal care to restore and maintain your gum health.

What is periodontal disease and how common is it?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the gums and bone supporting your teeth. It begins when plaque buildup irritates your gums, causing inflammation and infection. Remarkably, four out of five people have some form of periodontal disease and don’t know it because early stages are often painless. This makes regular dental checkups crucial for early detection.
The primary cause is bacterial plaque that isn’t removed through proper brushing and flossing. Other factors increase your risk including smoking, diabetes, pregnancy, certain medications, genetics, stress, and crooked teeth that are hard to clean properly. Poor nutrition and teeth grinding can also contribute to gum disease development and progression.
Key warning signs include bleeding gums (even during gentle brushing), red, puffy, or tender gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, new spaces between teeth, receding gums, and pus around teeth or gums. However, early periodontal disease can be painless, so you might not notice symptoms until the condition becomes advanced. Regular checkups help catch problems early.
During your periodontal examination, we use a small probe to measure the depth of pockets between your teeth and gums. Healthy pockets measure three millimeters or less and don’t bleed. Deeper pockets and bleeding indicate periodontal disease. We also evaluate X-rays to check for bone loss and assess your overall gum health and oral hygiene.
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of periodontal disease, involving gum inflammation and bleeding but no permanent damage. It’s completely reversible with proper treatment and home care. Periodontitis is more advanced, involving irreversible damage to the gums and bone supporting your teeth. Early intervention can prevent gingivitis from progressing to periodontitis.
Treatment depends on the severity of your condition. Early stages may only require improved oral hygiene and regular cleanings. More advanced cases need scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to remove bacteria and tartar below the gum line. Severe cases might require surgical treatment. We tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs and disease progression.
While advanced periodontal disease cannot be completely “cured,” it can be successfully controlled and managed to prevent further damage. Early-stage gingivitis is reversible with proper treatment and oral hygiene. The key is catching and treating periodontal disease early, then maintaining excellent home care and regular professional maintenance to keep it under control.
Research suggests links between periodontal disease and serious health conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications. The bacteria and inflammation from gum disease may enter your bloodstream and affect other parts of your body. Maintaining healthy gums contributes to your overall health and well-being.
Prevention focuses on removing bacterial plaque through excellent oral hygiene. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, use an antimicrobial mouthwash if recommended, don’t smoke, eat a balanced diet, and maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings. Early detection and treatment of gingivitis prevents progression to more serious periodontal disease.
Once you’ve had periodontal treatment, you’ll typically need maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months instead of the standard twice-yearly schedule. These deeper cleanings remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line and monitor your periodontal health. The frequency may be adjusted based on your individual healing response and risk factors for disease recurrence.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
