Complete Oral Health Assessment

What Are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Dental exams and cleanings are comprehensive preventive appointments that assess your oral health and remove harmful plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. These routine visits allow your dentist to detect problems early when they’re easier and less expensive to treat. Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City provides thorough exams and professional cleanings that form the foundation of excellent oral health.

Your exam includes screening for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions, while the cleaning removes bacteria and debris that cause tooth decay and gum inflammation. Regular appointments every six months help maintain your oral health and catch potential issues before they become serious problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Exams & Cleanings FAQs

Regular dental exams and cleanings are the foundation of excellent oral health and prevent serious problems before they start. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive comprehensive preventive care that keeps your smile healthy and beautiful for life.

What happens during a comprehensive dental exam?

During your dental exam, we’ll perform a thorough evaluation including examination of diagnostic X-rays to detect decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss, oral cancer screening of your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums, gum disease evaluation to check for signs of periodontal problems, examination of all tooth surfaces for decay using special instruments, and review of existing restorations like fillings and crowns.
Most patients should have dental exams and cleanings every six months, though some may need more frequent visits based on their oral health needs. Factors like gum disease, history of cavities, medical conditions like diabetes, or habits like smoking may require more frequent care. Your hygienist and dentist will recommend the optimal schedule for maintaining your specific oral health.
Professional dental cleanings involve removal of calculus (hardened tartar) that can only be removed with special dental instruments, removal of plaque – the sticky bacterial film that causes gum inflammation and tooth decay, and teeth polishing to remove surface stains and plaque that regular brushing can’t eliminate. This thorough cleaning helps prevent cavities and gum disease while keeping your smile bright.
While excellent home care is crucial, professional cleanings remove hardened tartar and plaque from areas your toothbrush and floss can’t reach effectively. Even with perfect brushing and flossing, some plaque inevitably hardens into tartar that requires professional removal. Regular cleanings also include early detection of problems that you might not notice at home.
Most patients find dental cleanings comfortable, though you may experience some minor sensitivity if you have gum inflammation or haven’t had a cleaning in a while. If you have sensitive teeth or extensive tartar buildup, we can use topical anesthetics or other comfort measures to ensure your cleaning is pleasant. Regular cleanings actually become more comfortable over time as your gums get healthier.
Dental X-rays are essential for detecting problems not visible during visual examination, including decay between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, cysts, tumors, and problems with tooth roots. New patients typically need a full series of X-rays, which are good for 3-5 years. Bite-wing X-rays are usually taken annually to check for new problems between routine visits.
Yes, dental X-rays are very safe and use minimal radiation exposure. The amount of radiation from a full mouth series of X-rays equals what you receive naturally in a single day from environmental sources. We use modern digital X-ray technology that reduces exposure even further, and protective lead aprons provide additional safety during imaging.
Oral cancer screening involves examining your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of abnormalities or cancer. Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves treatment success rates. This quick, painless screening is included in every exam and can literally be life-saving, especially for patients who use tobacco or consume alcohol regularly.
Yes! Your mouth often reflects your overall health, and we can sometimes detect signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders during your dental exam. Changes in your gums, teeth, or oral tissues can provide early warning signs of health problems, making regular dental visits an important part of your overall healthcare routine.
Preparation is simple – continue your regular oral hygiene routine, bring a list of any medications you’re taking, and inform us of any changes in your health or concerns about your teeth or gums. If you’re anxious about your visit, let us know so we can discuss comfort options. Arriving a few minutes early allows time to update your medical history and ask any questions before your appointment.

Patient Testimonials

Hundreds of 5-Star Reviews Tell Our Story

From their very first visit, our patients often express that they feel like part of our family. These heartfelt stories truly reflect our unwavering commitment to providing compassionate care and achieving life-changing results for everyone.
I have had several significant procedures at Canyon Rim Dental, including a gum graft, and it has all been a very good experience. Their tech is quite modern, including a digital x-ray system with AI analysis. They are able to precision mill crowns on-site. The gum graft I recently had was near painless and recovery was quick and easy, nothing like you might read online. Even though they’re out of network for me, I still prefer them vs any other dentist I’ve used. Highly recommended!

Dr. Sam and the entire team at Canyon Rim Dental are outstanding. They are professional, kind, and genuinely take the time to explain your treatment plan and options so you feel comfortable and informed. I highly recommend them, especially if you experience dental anxiety. They made me feel completely at ease and confident in the care I was receiving.

You’ll have to forgive me cause I can’t do names, but the doctor and all his staff are amazing. The hygienist we see is wonderful and thorough and even has a great sense of humor, the doctor is so gentle and his work really seems to be holding up, and even the assistant we usually see is an absolute delight. Not to mention the receptionist, we could chat for hours. No issues with their fillings, and the experience was far less painful than I’ve had anywhere else. I really love going to this place, 10/10 recommend

It has been a long time being back at the dentist and I was extremely embarrassed for letting the state of my teeth get so bad. The staff at Canyon Rim made me feel so validated and comfortable, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience in my teeth journey. Thank you to all of the kind staff at this clinic!
