Surgical Sleep Breathing Solutions

What Is Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Sleep apnea is a serious condition where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, preventing your body from getting the oxygen it needs. At Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City, specialized oral appliances offer an effective alternative to traditional CPAP machines, helping you breathe normally throughout the night.

Your treatment involves custom-fitted dental devices that gently position your jaw to keep your airway open while you sleep. These comfortable appliances work by preventing the soft tissues in your throat from collapsing, which is the primary cause of obstructive sleep apnea. The result is uninterrupted breathing, better sleep quality, and improved overall health without the inconvenience of masks or machines.

Sleep Apnea Appliance Relief

Sleep Apnea Appliances

Sleep apnea disrupts millions of lives with interrupted breathing throughout the night. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll find custom oral appliances that keep your airway open, allowing you to breathe freely and sleep soundly without the need for cumbersome CPAP machines.

TAP® 3 (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)

The TAP® 3 is the smallest, most comfortable member of the TAP family. It is a two-part custom-created sleep apnea appliance that fits over the teeth in much the same way as a sports mouthguard. The TAP® 3 projects the jaw forward to prevent the tongue and soft tissues from impeding the airway. The lower jaw positioner is adjustable, which means that it can be altered to suit the comfort level of the wearer. The TAP® 3 appliance can accommodate the three main types of malocclusion, and allows the lips to fully close.

OASYS Appliance

The OASYS appliance is designed to move the base of the tongue toward the front of the mouth by gently repositioning the jawbone (mandible). This shift opens the oropharynx and strengthens the upper airway. An extension of the upper shield projects toward the nose, creating a larger nasal opening and less resistance to normal airflow. This adjustable appliance is comfortable to wear and extremely patient friendly.

Klearway™ Appliance

The Klearway™ Appliance is generally used to alleviate obstructive sleep disorder and eliminate snoring. The patient or dentist can project the jaw forwards in increments of .25mm at a time. This ensures maximum comfort for the sleeper. The Klearway™ appliance is made from Variflex™ heat softening acrylic, which makes it easier to insert. Running warm water over the appliance makes it pliable, but once placed in the desired position, the acrylic hardens again.

Herbst Telescopic Appliance

The Herbst appliance is held in the mouth by clasps and friction grips. It is made of acrylic, and contains adjustable metal wiring. The advantage of this appliance is that the wearer is able to move vertically and laterally without dislodging the appliance. The Herbst appliance is usually used in mild and moderate cases of sleep apnea, and can also alleviate loud snoring effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep Apnea Treatment FAQs

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that affects your breathing during sleep and overall health. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive effective oral appliance therapy that provides a comfortable alternative to CPAP machines for better sleep and improved well-being.

What is sleep apnea and why is it dangerous?

Sleep apnea is a disorder where you repeatedly stop breathing during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times per night. These breathing pauses cause oxygen levels to drop and force your brain to wake you partially to restart breathing. This disrupts sleep quality and can lead to serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure if left untreated.
Common symptoms include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime fatigue, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and witnessed breathing interruptions during sleep. Your partner may notice your breathing stopping and starting during the night. Many people don’t realize they have sleep apnea because symptoms occur while sleeping.
Dentists can treat sleep apnea using oral appliances that gently reposition your jaw and tongue to keep your airway open during sleep. These custom-made devices are comfortable, quiet, and much more convenient than CPAP machines. They work by moving your lower jaw slightly forward, preventing your tongue and soft tissues from blocking your airway.
Canyon Rim Dental provides various FDA-approved oral appliances including TAP® (Thornton Adjustable Positioner), OASYS, KlearwayTM, and Herbst appliances. Each device has unique features and advantages. We’ll evaluate your specific needs, sleep study results, and anatomy to recommend the most appropriate appliance for effective treatment of your sleep apnea.
Oral appliances are highly effective for mild to moderate sleep apnea and are often preferred by patients due to their comfort and convenience. While CPAP machines may be more effective for severe cases, oral appliances have much better compliance rates because they’re easier to use and travel with. Many patients who couldn’t tolerate CPAP find great success with oral appliances.
Many medical insurance plans cover oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea, especially when you have a diagnosis from a sleep study. Coverage varies by plan, and some require you to try CPAP first. Our team will help verify your benefits, work with your insurance company, and provide necessary documentation to maximize your coverage for treatment.
You’re likely a good candidate if you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, can’t tolerate CPAP therapy, have healthy teeth and gums to support the appliance, and don’t have severe TMJ problems. A sleep study diagnosis is typically required before beginning treatment. We’ll evaluate your oral health and work with your physician to determine if oral appliance therapy is right for you.
Most patients adjust to their oral appliance within 1-2 weeks of regular use. Initially, you may experience mild jaw soreness, increased saliva, or tooth discomfort, but these effects typically diminish as you adapt. We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your comfort and make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal fit and effectiveness.
Clean your appliance daily with a soft toothbrush and cool water, or use denture cleaning tablets. Store it in the provided case when not in use, and bring it to dental appointments for professional cleaning. Avoid hot water which can warp the appliance. With proper care, most oral appliances last 3-5 years before replacement is needed.
Lifestyle modifications that can improve sleep apnea include maintaining a healthy weight, sleeping on your side instead of your back, avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime, quitting smoking, and treating nasal congestion. While these changes can help, they’re usually most effective when combined with oral appliance therapy or other medical treatments for comprehensive sleep apnea management.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
