Frequently Asked Questions

TMJ Treatment FAQs

TMJ disorders cause jaw pain and dysfunction that can significantly impact your daily life. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive comprehensive evaluation and treatment to relieve pain and restore proper jaw function.

What is TMJ and what causes it?

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder affects the joints that connect your jaw to your skull, along with the surrounding muscles. Common causes include teeth grinding or clenching, jaw injury, arthritis, stress, misaligned bite, and certain habits like nail-biting or excessive gum chewing. The exact cause isn’t always clear, and multiple factors often contribute to TMJ problems.
TMJ symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness, difficulty or discomfort while chewing, aching facial pain, locking of the jaw joint, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing your mouth, headaches, earaches, neck pain, and difficulty opening your mouth wide. Symptoms may be constant or intermittent and can affect one or both sides of your face.
Diagnosis involves a thorough examination of your jaw joints, bite analysis, evaluation of jaw movement and muscle function, and discussion of your symptoms and medical history. We may take X-rays or recommend advanced imaging if needed. Sometimes we’ll have you track your symptoms over time to identify patterns and triggers that help guide treatment.
Non-surgical TMJ treatments include custom oral appliances to reduce grinding and improve jaw position, physical therapy exercises, stress management techniques, anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, hot and cold therapy, dietary modifications to avoid hard or chewy foods, and lifestyle changes to reduce jaw stress. Most TMJ cases respond well to conservative treatment.
Custom oral appliances (splints or nightguards) help by repositioning your jaw into a more comfortable position, reducing muscle tension, preventing grinding and clenching, and allowing inflamed joints and muscles to heal. These appliances are worn primarily at night but may be recommended for daytime use in severe cases. They’re adjusted specifically for your bite and comfort.
Some mild TMJ problems may improve on their own, especially if they’re related to temporary stress or minor injury. However, chronic TMJ disorders typically require professional treatment to prevent worsening and provide relief. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes and can prevent the condition from becoming more severe or chronic.
Helpful lifestyle modifications include eating softer foods, avoiding extreme jaw movements like wide yawning or loud singing, not chewing gum or biting your nails, applying heat or cold packs to sore jaw muscles, practicing stress reduction techniques, maintaining good posture, and avoiding sleeping on your stomach. These changes support professional treatment and promote healing.
Surgery is rarely needed for TMJ disorders and is typically considered only when conservative treatments have failed and symptoms significantly impact quality of life. Surgical options range from minimally invasive arthroscopy to open joint surgery in severe cases. Most patients find excellent relief with non-surgical treatments, making surgery unnecessary.
Treatment response varies depending on the severity of your condition and type of treatment. Some patients notice improvement within days of starting treatment, while others may need several weeks or months to experience significant relief. Oral appliances often provide noticeable improvement within 2-4 weeks of consistent use. Patience and compliance with treatment recommendations are key to success.
Yes, untreated TMJ disorders can impact your overall well-being. Chronic pain can lead to sleep problems, difficulty eating proper nutrition, increased stress and anxiety, headaches, and neck problems. The constant discomfort can also affect your mood and quality of life. Proper treatment not only relieves jaw symptoms but can improve your general health and daily functioning.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
