Precise Custom Tooth Fillings

What Are Inlay Restorations?

Frame 37842
An inlay restoration is a custom-made filling that fits precisely into the prepared cavity of your tooth. Unlike traditional fillings that are placed directly in your mouth, inlays are created in a dental laboratory using impressions of your tooth for an exact fit. Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City uses inlays when you need more than a simple filling but less than a full crown.

Inlays are typically made from tooth-colored porcelain or composite materials that blend naturally with your existing teeth. This restoration method preserves more of your natural tooth structure compared to crowns while providing superior durability and longevity compared to traditional fillings.

Your Inlay Solution Explained

Who Are Inlay Restorations For?

Tooth damage happens to everyone, and you shouldn’t have to settle for unsightly metal fillings or worry about further decay. You might be perfect for inlay restorations if you need durable repair that looks completely natural.

Large Cavity Repair

You have significant tooth decay that's too big for regular fillings but not severe enough to require a full crown over the entire tooth.

Failed Filling Replacement

Your old metal or composite fillings have cracked, fallen out, or are causing problems, and you want a stronger, more attractive replacement.

Cosmetic Enhancement

You want to replace dark, noticeable fillings with tooth-colored restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural smile and boost your confidence.

Conservative Tooth Repair

Our Inlay Restoration Process

Inlays offer a conservative way to repair moderately damaged teeth without removing healthy tooth structure.
Here’s how we restore your tooth’s strength and appearance with precision-crafted inlays.
1

Detailed Preparation

We carefully remove the damaged or decayed portion of your tooth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible. Using magnification and precise instruments, we shape the cavity to perfectly accommodate your custom inlay restoration.
2

Impression and Design

We take highly accurate impressions of your prepared tooth and send them to our dental laboratory. Our skilled technicians craft your inlay from durable, tooth-colored materials that match your natural teeth perfectly in both strength and appearance.
3

Permanent Placement

Once your inlay returns from the lab, we carefully fit and bond it into place using advanced adhesive techniques. We make final adjustments to ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable, giving you a restoration that looks and functions like your original tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Inlay Restoration FAQs

Inlay restorations offer a conservative approach to repairing damaged teeth while preserving healthy tooth structure.
At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive precision-crafted inlays that restore both function and natural beauty.

What is an inlay restoration?

An inlay is a custom-made restoration that fits precisely into the prepared cavity of your tooth, similar to a puzzle piece. Unlike traditional fillings that are placed directly into your tooth as a soft material, inlays are created in a dental laboratory from durable materials like porcelain or composite resin, then permanently bonded to your tooth.
While regular fillings are placed directly into your tooth during your appointment, inlays are pre-fabricated restorations made from stronger, longer-lasting materials. Inlays provide superior fit, durability, and aesthetics compared to traditional fillings. They’re ideal when you need more than a filling can provide but less than a full crown requires.
Inlays are perfect when you have moderate tooth damage that’s too extensive for a regular filling but not severe enough to require a crown. They’re excellent for treating large cavities, replacing old or failing fillings, or repairing teeth with minor fractures. Inlays help preserve more of your natural tooth structure than crowns.
We typically use tooth-colored porcelain for inlays because it closely matches your natural teeth and provides excellent durability. Porcelain inlays are stain-resistant and can withstand normal chewing forces for many years. The material choice depends on the location of your tooth and your specific needs and preferences.
The inlay process usually requires two comfortable appointments. During your first visit, we’ll prepare your tooth and take precise impressions that are sent to our dental laboratory. You’ll receive a temporary restoration to protect your tooth. At your second appointment, we’ll remove the temporary and permanently bond your custom inlay in place.
Inlays are more conservative than crowns because they preserve more of your healthy tooth structure. If your tooth damage is moderate rather than extensive, an inlay can provide excellent results while maintaining the strength of your natural tooth. However, severely damaged teeth may still require the full coverage protection that only crowns can provide.
With proper care, porcelain inlays can last 15-20 years or even longer. Their durability often exceeds that of traditional fillings while providing better aesthetics. Factors like your oral hygiene, diet, and whether you grind your teeth can affect longevity. Regular checkups help ensure your inlay continues performing optimally.
Not at all! Porcelain inlays are crafted to match the exact color and translucency of your natural teeth. They blend so seamlessly that even you may forget which tooth has the restoration. The precision fit and natural appearance make inlays an excellent choice for visible teeth in your smile.
Caring for your inlay is simple – just maintain your regular oral hygiene routine of brushing twice daily and flossing. Avoid chewing on extremely hard objects like ice or using your teeth as tools. Regular professional cleanings and checkups at Canyon Rim Dental will help ensure your inlay stays healthy and functional.
While inlays are very durable, damage can occasionally occur from trauma or excessive force. Depending on the extent of damage, we may be able to repair or will need to replace the inlay. The good news is that if replacement is needed, your tooth preparation remains minimal, and we can create a new inlay relatively quickly.

I’ve never had a more enjoyable dentist experience than I did at Canyon Rim Dental. I had my new patient visit + cleaning today, and I am amazed at the kind of quality care they gave me. Shanna was my hygienist and performed the perfect balance of gentle but thorough cleaning. “Dr. Sam” was kind and informative when reviewing the visit with me. The office is equipped with the latest innovations in dentistry equipment, including AI assistance for analyzing patient X-rays. I felt like I was given the highest level of care, and I am actually looking forward to my next visit!

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
