Tooth-Saving Infection Treatment

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy removes infected or damaged tissue from inside your tooth, allowing you to keep your natural tooth instead of having it extracted. When bacteria reach the pulp (nerve and blood vessels) inside your tooth, it causes severe pain and can lead to abscesses. Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City performs root canal therapy to eliminate the infection while preserving your tooth structure.

During treatment, the infected pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of your tooth is cleaned and sealed with special materials. Contrary to popular belief, modern root canal therapy is typically comfortable and highly successful, often providing relief from the intense pain caused by the infection.

Your Root Canal Solution Explained

Who Is Root Canal Therapy For?

Severe tooth pain and infection are serious problems that require immediate attention, but you don’t have to lose your natural tooth. You might need root canal therapy if you’re experiencing intense dental pain or have been told you have an infected tooth.

Severe Tooth Pain

You're experiencing intense, throbbing tooth pain that keeps you awake at night or makes it impossible to concentrate on daily activities and responsibilities.

Infected Tooth

Your tooth has developed an abscess or infection that requires treatment to save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading to other areas.

Deep Decay

You have extensive decay that has reached the nerve of your tooth, causing pain and requiring treatment to eliminate the infection and preserve the tooth.

Save Your Natural Tooth

Our Root Canal Process

Root canal therapy allows us to save your infected or severely damaged tooth instead of extracting it.
Here’s how we eliminate your pain while preserving your natural tooth.
1

Pain Relief and Diagnosis

We begin by providing local anesthesia to ensure you’re completely comfortable, then use advanced imaging to assess the extent of infection or damage. This thorough evaluation helps us determine the best approach to save your tooth and eliminate your discomfort.
2

Infection Removal

We create a small access opening in your tooth and carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside the root canals. Using specialized instruments, we clean and shape the canal system to eliminate all bacteria and prepare the space for filling.
3

Sealing and Restoration

After thoroughly disinfecting the cleaned canals, we fill them with a biocompatible material and seal the access opening. In most cases, we’ll recommend a crown to protect and strengthen your treated tooth, ensuring it can function normally for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root Canal Therapy FAQs

Root canal therapy saves infected or severely damaged teeth from extraction. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive comfortable, effective treatment that preserves your natural tooth and eliminates pain.

What exactly is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that removes infected or damaged tissue from inside your tooth’s root canals, then cleans, disinfects, and seals the space. This treatment saves your natural tooth when the inner pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. It’s often the only alternative to tooth extraction.
Common signs include severe toothache when chewing, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, darkening of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in nearby gums, or a persistent or recurring pimple on the gums. However, some infected teeth cause no pain at all, which is why regular checkups are crucial for early detection and treatment.
Modern root canal therapy is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a large filling. We use effective local anesthesia to numb the area completely, and many patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure actually is. Any mild discomfort afterward usually responds well to over-the-counter pain medications and subsides within a few days.
Most root canals can be completed in one appointment lasting 60-90 minutes, though complex cases may require a second visit. The time depends on which tooth is being treated and how many roots it has. Front teeth typically have one root, while back teeth may have three or four roots requiring more time.
After root canal therapy, you’ll need a permanent restoration like a crown to protect and strengthen your tooth. The tooth structure becomes more brittle after treatment, so a crown helps prevent fractures and ensures long-term success. We’ll place a temporary filling initially, then schedule your crown appointment once healing is complete.
While root canal therapy has a high success rate (over 95%), occasional complications can occur, such as missed canals, new infections, or crown problems. Most issues can be successfully treated with retreatment or additional procedures. Regular checkups and X-rays help us monitor your treated tooth and catch any problems early.
Saving your natural tooth through root canal therapy is almost always preferable to extraction. Keeping your natural tooth maintains proper chewing function, prevents adjacent teeth from shifting, and avoids the need for more complex and expensive replacement options like implants or bridges. Natural teeth that receive proper treatment can last a lifetime.
Initially, avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is placed. Once your crown is in place, care for the tooth just like your other teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. The treated tooth can function normally and doesn’t require any special maintenance beyond good oral hygiene.
A tooth that has had root canal therapy may darken slightly over time, but this is usually not noticeable, especially on back teeth. If aesthetics are a concern, we can address discoloration with whitening treatments or a crown that matches your desired shade. Most patients find that treated teeth look completely normal.
Root canal therapy has an excellent success rate, with most treated teeth lasting many years or even a lifetime with proper care. Success depends on factors like the extent of infection, your overall oral health, and following through with recommended follow-up care including permanent restoration. Dr. Delahunty’s specialized training ensures optimal outcomes for your treatment.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
