Effective Bruxism Treatment Solutions

What Is Therapy for Bruxism?

image-01656587
Bruxism, the medical term for teeth grinding and jaw clenching, affects millions of people and often occurs unconsciously during sleep or times of stress. This condition can wear down your teeth, cause jaw pain, trigger headaches, and lead to serious dental damage if left untreated.

Your bruxism therapy focuses on protecting your teeth and relieving the painful symptoms associated with chronic grinding and clenching. At Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City, treatment typically involves custom-made nightguards or oral appliances that create a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth. These devices not only prevent further tooth damage but also help relax your jaw muscles and reduce the strain on your temporomandibular joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bruxism Treatment FAQs

Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) can cause serious damage to your teeth and jaw joints. At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive effective treatment options that protect your teeth and relieve associated pain and discomfort.

What is bruxism and how common is it?

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding, gnashing, or clenching of teeth, typically occurring during sleep but sometimes during waking hours. It’s one of the most common sleep disorders, affecting millions of people. Many sufferers are unaware they have bruxism because it often occurs during deep sleep when the normal chewing reflex control is turned off.
Bruxism can be caused by various factors including stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, certain medications, caffeine consumption, alcohol use, and malocclusion (bad bite). Sleep bruxism is often associated with other sleep disorders like sleep apnea. Daytime bruxism is more commonly linked to stress, anxiety, or concentration habits.
Common signs include worn, flattened, or chipped teeth, increased tooth sensitivity, jaw pain or tightness, earaches, headaches (especially upon waking), facial pain, disrupted sleep, and loud grinding sounds that may wake your sleeping partner. You might also notice indentations on your tongue or cheek tissue from clenching.
Bruxism can cause significant damage including tooth wear and fractures, loosened teeth, gum recession, jaw joint problems (TMJ), chronic headaches, facial pain, and even tooth loss in severe cases. The excessive forces generated during grinding can be several times stronger than normal chewing forces, leading to accelerated dental damage and jaw joint deterioration.
Diagnosis involves examining your teeth for signs of wear, checking jaw muscles for tenderness, evaluating jaw joint function, and discussing your symptoms and sleep patterns. We may recommend a sleep study if sleep disorders are suspected, or suggest using a BiteStrip® device to monitor nighttime jaw muscle activity and confirm bruxism severity.
Treatment options include custom-fitted nightguards to protect teeth during sleep, NTI-tss devices that reduce jaw muscle contractions, stress management techniques, addressing underlying sleep disorders, bite adjustment if malocclusion is present, and in severe cases, Botox® injections to relax jaw muscles. The best approach depends on your specific situation and bruxism severity.
Custom nightguards are made from impressions of your teeth to ensure perfect fit and maximum comfort. They create a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, absorbing grinding forces and preventing tooth damage. While there’s an initial adjustment period, most patients find them comfortable to wear and notice significant improvement in symptoms within days.
Nightguard use is typically long-term since bruxism tends to be a chronic condition that may worsen during stressful periods. However, some patients find their grinding decreases over time with stress management and lifestyle changes. Regular checkups allow us to monitor your condition and adjust treatment as needed. Most nightguards last 3-5 years with proper care.
While there’s no single permanent cure for bruxism, it can be effectively managed and controlled. Treatment focuses on protecting your teeth from damage and addressing underlying causes like stress or sleep disorders. Many patients experience significant improvement with proper treatment, and some find their bruxism decreases naturally over time as contributing factors are addressed.
Helpful lifestyle modifications include stress management through exercise, meditation, or counseling, limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption especially before bedtime, establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, avoiding chewing on non-food items like pens or gum, and treating any underlying sleep disorders. While these changes can help, they’re usually most effective when combined with protective appliances.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
