Permanent Gap-Filling Solutions

What Are Fixed Bridges?

A fixed bridge is a permanent dental appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth by connecting to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Unlike removable partial dentures, bridges are cemented in place and cannot be taken out, giving you a stable and secure solution for missing teeth. Canyon Rim Dental in Salt Lake City creates bridges that blend seamlessly with your natural smile.

Your bridge consists of crowns that fit over the supporting teeth (called abutments) with artificial teeth (pontics) suspended between them. This creates a literal “bridge” across the gap, restoring your complete smile while preventing remaining teeth from shifting into the empty space.

Your Bridge Solution Explained

Who Are Fixed Bridges For?

Missing teeth in a row is more common than you think, and you don’t have to live with gaps that affect your daily life. You might be perfect for fixed bridges if you need a permanent solution to replace consecutive missing teeth.

Missing Adjacent Teeth

You're missing two or more teeth next to each other and want a permanent replacement that won't require daily removal like partial dentures.

Healthy Surrounding Teeth

You have strong, healthy teeth on both sides of the gap that can support a bridge and provide long-lasting stability for your restoration.

Active Lifestyle

You want a secure tooth replacement that won't shift, slip, or require special maintenance during eating, speaking, or physical activities throughout your day.

Permanent Tooth Replacement

Our Bridge Placement Process

Fixed bridges permanently replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to your existing healthy teeth.
Here’s how we restore your complete smile with a durable, natural-looking bridge.
1

Anchor Tooth Preparation

We carefully prepare the teeth on either side of your gap by removing a small amount of enamel to accommodate the bridge crowns. This process is done under local anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort throughout the procedure.
2

Precision Impressions

We take detailed impressions of your prepared teeth and the gap area, then send these to our dental laboratory along with specific color and shape specifications. A temporary bridge protects your prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is being crafted.
3

Permanent Bridge Placement

When your custom bridge returns from the lab, we remove your temporary bridge and carefully fit your permanent restoration. After making any necessary adjustments to ensure proper bite and comfortable fit, we permanently cement your bridge in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed Bridge FAQs

Fixed bridges permanently replace missing teeth while restoring your smile’s function and appearance.
At Canyon Rim Dental, you’ll receive expertly crafted bridges that look natural and provide years of reliable service.

What is a fixed dental bridge?

A fixed bridge is a permanent restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by connecting crowns to your natural teeth on either side of the gap. The crowns (called abutments) anchor the bridge, while the artificial teeth (called pontics) fill the space where teeth are missing. It’s “fixed” because you cannot remove it like a partial denture.
Unlike removable partial dentures that you take out for cleaning, fixed bridges are permanently cemented in place and feel just like your natural teeth. Bridges don’t have clasps or require adhesives, and they won’t slip or move when you eat or speak. They also help maintain your facial structure by providing continuous support.
You’re likely a good candidate if you have one or more missing teeth with healthy, strong teeth on both sides of the gap. These adjacent teeth will serve as anchors for your bridge. We’ll evaluate your oral health, bite alignment, and bone structure to determine if a bridge is the best solution for your specific situation.
Getting a fixed bridge typically requires two appointments over 2-3 weeks. During your first visit, we’ll prepare the anchor teeth and take impressions for your custom bridge. You’ll wear a temporary bridge while your permanent one is being crafted. At your second appointment, we’ll remove the temporary bridge and permanently cement your new bridge.
Most bridges are made from porcelain fused to a metal framework for optimal strength and aesthetics, or from all-ceramic materials for maximum natural appearance. We’ll select materials based on the location of your bridge, your bite forces, and aesthetic preferences. All options are designed to match your natural teeth perfectly.
With proper care and regular dental visits, fixed bridges typically last 10-15 years or longer. Their longevity depends on your oral hygiene, the health of the supporting teeth, and your bite forces. Regular checkups allow us to monitor your bridge and the supporting teeth to ensure everything remains healthy and functional.
Cleaning your bridge requires special attention to the area where the pontic meets your gums. Use a bridge threader or water flosser to clean underneath the artificial teeth, and brush normally around the crowns. We’ll show you proper techniques and recommend specific cleaning aids to keep your bridge and supporting teeth healthy.
Absolutely! We carefully match your bridge’s color, shape, and size to your surrounding teeth. Modern materials and techniques create incredibly natural-looking results that blend seamlessly with your smile. The artificial teeth are crafted to complement your facial features and bite pattern for optimal function and aesthetics.
While bridges are very durable, problems can occasionally occur, such as decay in the supporting teeth or bridge damage. If issues arise, we’ll evaluate the situation and recommend appropriate treatment, which might include bridge repair, replacement, or alternative solutions like dental implants. Early detection through regular checkups helps prevent major problems.
Dental implants are often an excellent alternative to bridges because they don’t require altering healthy adjacent teeth. Implants replace the root and crown of missing teeth independently, potentially lasting longer than bridges. We’ll discuss both options with you, considering factors like bone density, cost, timeline, and your personal preferences to help you make the best decision.

They were amazing for me as a new patient! Staff were very warm and friendly and clear with communication. They have an intake survey that asks what they can do to make dental work more comfortable for you and your level of dental anxiety, which is awesome! I’m very glad to have found this place 🙂

I loved all of the staff. There were very kind and understanding. They let me know in details that I could understand as well as answered various questions I had. It had been at least two years since seeing a dentist and I was looking for one I could see since I got a new insurance. I also went in for a suspected cavity I may have had due to some pain that I was having for over a month. They checked as well as told me I needed to have a root canal procedure. They told me after they got some of it done that they still have some more time for me to finish the temporary crown until the final part. I really appreciate this

I have been a terrible adult and neglected finding a dentist since I left the Kent, WA area in 2016 (don’t tell my wonderful dentist there he would be so disappointed in me) Shor story is it’s now 2025 and I wish I would have search sooner. DR. SAM DELAHUNTY performed a what felt to me like a complex root canal therapy for me today in not only a professional manner and expedient manner but also with kindness and care that you really want when people are drilling around sensitive nerves. He answered any questions I had and even followed up later with me in the evening. I have plenty more work for their team ( don’t neglect your teeth cleanings kids) and i am nothing but excited to return for the offices services. I wish i would have caught the names of all the staff in the office they are always so friendly. Cannot recommend this office more.
